Where it all Began
Any business owner can tell you that growing a successful business doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, hard work, perseverance, and an exceptional team to get there. Richard, owner of Eshelman Mill Gardens & Landscapes, Inc., first began his lawn business back in the early 1980s during his high school days. A true product of youngest sibling hand-me-downs, Richard took over his older brother’s lawn mowing accounts in Montgomery County after they graduated and left home. By 1985, the business grew to the point of hiring multiple employees, all while he attended college majoring in accounting and playing baseball.
Over the years, Richard’s company evolved to offer complete design, installation, and landscaping services. In 2014, his successful company was sold, and Richard relocated to Lancaster, where he later acquired Eshelman Mill Gardens in 2015. This acquisition brought on board an exceptional team with decades of experience.

Meet Lauren – Landscape Designer
Along with the acquisition came one of our most invaluable assets – Landscape Designer Lauren Engle. Lauren is the first point of contact and sees through each project – from early napkin sketches to the final day (and every step in between). She works closely with each client, learning about their lifestyle, aesthetics, and aspirations to design a space that’s perfect for them. Lauren’s natural talent in design is clear in seeing her work.
“Growing up in Lancaster, my family had a small garden which I always enjoyed helping with. I enjoy the outdoors and like to be creative. I have always been drawn to all things design. My sister would always have these fashion magazines like Elle or Vogue like most teenage girls, but I was reading Architectural Digest and Better Homes and Gardens.”
Lauren graduated from Delaware Valley University with a bachelor’s in Environmental Design and Ornamental horticulture.
22 years later, Lauren has proven herself over and over again in her landscape designs. Even more, it’s Lauren’s care and dedication to our clients that makes the overall project experience exceptional.
Meet Joe – Project Manager
With over 40 years of experience, Joe Bowers brings a well-rounded landscape talent to our clients’ projects. His passion for education in the gardening industry landed him in the Longwood Gardens’ Professional Gardener Training Program among other industry seminars and training programs throughout the years, and it is clear in his work.
Some of Joe’s favorite projects include creating ponds and waterfalls and installing patios and walkways. His knowledge, talent, and old-world craftsmanship are apparent in every design and build project we do at Eshelman Mill Gardens & Landscapes.
Meet Cory – Crew Chief
For Cory Albright, hardscaping is a form of art. He brings to each project over 10 years of extensive work in stone, stone veneer, and cobblestone, along with other common hardscaping products.
“My goal as a Landscape Professional is to provide every client with a unique experience and to meet and exceed their expectations.”
Cory is also a state-licensed lawn care technician with expertise in turf care, pesticides, and organic lawn care.
