Our Goal: Revitalize a problematic backyard into a refined outdoor retreat

Built in 1874, Paul’s historic house in Lancaster City was originally a tobacco-drying shed, later turned into a barber shop. Paul bought the property in the 1970s and made it his home, where he has lived for nearly 45 years. Paul’s property has all the charm and character one could hope for on a quaint city side street, but the backyard presented some challenges.  Uneven grading caused water to enter the home during heavy rains, and the brick Paul laid in the late ‘70s was deteriorating.

“I’ve been wanting to do this project for a long time, and this past year I just thought, ok, it’s time,” Paul explained.

So, in January 2024, Paul reached out to us, and it was then that he and our landscape designer, Lauren Engle, discussed a plan.

“We connected immediately,” said Paul. “I really liked what she proposed. It was a very personalized experience.”

The Strategy: Remove and replace the brick, install a drainage system, and create a sophisticated aesthetic

Lauren’s first plan of action was to remove the deteriorating brick.  Due to the property’s tight space, our team’s only option was to hand-dig each brick out and wheelbarrow them through the garage to be hauled away.

“Even with all the work going in and out of the garage, my car didn’t have a speck of dust on it,” said Paul.

Now, with a bare yard, the elevation could be addressed by means of creating two levels.  And by adding a drain at the bottom of the second level and digging in an infiltration pit, the water issue is now resolved.

“Creating a functional space and resolving the problematic issues is the first priority before design,” explained Lauren.

The design for Paul was to reflect his undeniable sophistication and style.  To achieve this, Lauren chose flagstone pavers and long bluestone treads, giving the space a more refined look.  She also added retaining walls to preserve Paul’s mature gardens while also creating additional seating for guests.  And, by installing LED lights into the walkway and around the pool, evenings spent outside are calming and tranquil.

The Result: An attractive backyard that complements the home and homeowner

What once was a space of limited use and concern is now a space of joy.  It’s a space where Paul can relax in the middle of a bustling city or invite friends to dinner under the stars and a dip in the pool.

“It’s surreal how different this space is – I’m out here all the time now,” explained Paul.  “Working with Lauren and the Eshelman crew was truly a wonderful experience.”
