Transform your small city yard into a private retreat with expert design tips—featuring insights from our recent Lancaster City project.
Not every dream backyard needs rolling hills or wide-open acreage. In fact, some of the most rewarding landscapes we’ve designed are tucked into compact city lots—full of charm, purpose, and smart use of space.
Take our recent City Escape Project on Duke Street in Lancaster, PA. This backyard went from blank and uneven to beautifully intentional. What began as a sloped, underutilized space—complete with a covered pool and outdated railing—is now a private, peaceful retreat in the heart of the city.
We reimagined the entire area from the ground up—literally. The project started with grading and hardscaping to improve both flow and function. We removed the old railing to open up the entrance and installed bluestone treads (sourced from Penn Stone) to create a wide, welcoming stairway to the upper patio. A full-color flagstone patio was laid for a natural, elegant look, and a classic brick wall now anchors the back of the yard, adding timeless structure.
To finish the transformation, we added layered plantings along the perimeter, refreshed the beds with mulch, and created a soft lawn where the old pool once sat. The result? A space that feels finished, functional, and uniquely relaxing.
Here are some of the key strategies we used—and that you can apply—to turn a small city yard into a beautiful backyard escape:
1. Think Vertically
When square footage is limited, build upward. Retaining walls, raised beds, trellises, and tiered planting add vertical interest and make the space feel larger. They also create structure and soften hard edges without crowding the yard.
2. Define Zones with Hardscape
Urban backyards often need to serve many purposes in one space. Thoughtfully placed patios, low walls, and steps can help define different zones for entertaining, relaxing, or gardening. This adds both beauty and usability.
3. Choose Plants That Work Hard
In a tight footprint, every plant should serve a purpose—whether it’s privacy, color, pollinator support, or texture. In the City Escape Project, layered plantings along the fence helped soften the space and provide a sense of seclusion.
4. Privacy with Style
City yards often mean close neighbors, but that doesn’t mean you can’t feel tucked away. Thoughtful fencing, screens, or taller plantings can transform even an open lot into a quiet sanctuary.
5. Make It Personal
From a cozy reading corner to a dinner-party-ready patio, your outdoor space should reflect how you want to use it. A good design makes even the smallest space feel welcoming, relaxing, and entirely your own.
