Homeowners can easily fall into the trap of changing too much too soon in their landscape design. You don’t necessarily need to completely redesign your outdoor space. Customers are often surprised at how good their property can look with just a few small changes. Your backyard can go from overgrown and blah, to lush and attractive with just a little hard work.
One of the quickest ways to create an inviting space is simply weeding, edging and mulching. Weeding, edging and mulching is like spring cleaning your home; it freshens the look and gives it a clean style.
We recently did a small backyard landscaping project in Lancaster County that made a big difference in a short amount of time.

Weeding
First and foremost, we got rid of the weeds in their backyard. Just weeding their backyard made the entire space look bigger.
Mulching
After the weeds were removed, we added a fresh layer of mulch. Just mulching the beds gave the entire backyard a clean and finished look.
Planting
Finally, we planted some low maintenance shrubs and grasses that would always add visual appeal. The varying shades of greens, yellows and blues creates a relaxing aesthetic.
Finished
This outdoor space looks like a completely new backyard. All it took was weeding, mulching and a few new plants to make an inviting backyard.
You can also see that this wasn’t a huge space, but the homeowner still has a wonderful place to relax outside. You don’t need a lot of room to create a backyard oasis. Here are a few other tips for freshening the look of your backyard:
- Do you have enough privacy? Consider adding a fence, small trees or trellis to give you more privacy.
- Do you have enough sun/shade? If it’s too sunny, larger trees or an awning can provide shade. If it’s too shady, consider removing or pruning a tree or overgrown shrub.
- Are any of your plants dead or overgrown? Replace them with a new plant that is better suited to its location.
